Modern Systems for a Modern Industry â€“ how MyVT is transforming experiences

An example of the improved digital application process

Over the past few years, we’ve made major changes to how Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA) applications are processed. We have introduced Manage your Vehicle Testing (MyVT)  – the successor to the Technical Application System (TAS) – a new digital system designed to save you time, effort and money.

We know, that as businesses working with vehicle approvals, you want to save time wherever possible. We know that small changes can have huge impacts to your day.

We care about these things too. So read on for key updates, the story of how we made these decisions, and where we’re going next.

Insight gained

We had always planned to modernise our application processes. The question was: what changes did our customers want most?

We knew we had to get it right, so we went straight to our customers. We conducted surveys to find out where the main challenges were. If you're reading this, you may have replied to some of them!

The feedback we gathered from these sessions was extremely helpful, allowing us to focus on:

updating our digital systems – you told us that everyone who works in vehicle approvals should have access to modern, intuitive systems, saving time on daily tasks and training new staff  reducing paperwork – we were asked to re-design the forms to make them easier and quicker to process  adding new payment options – nearly all customers asked us to bring the old payment systems into the 21st century, allowing all users to pay online with a credit or debit card  What have we changed?

Updating our digital system was a significant task that took some time. The changes came in stages so everyone had time to learn the new functions.

A huge step came on 11 November 2024, when IVA customers who held pre-funded accounts were invited to apply to use MyVT.

By 27 January 2025, all applications were being managed through the new system – plus, online card payments could then be taken for IVA applications, allowing you to use a saved payment card.

By March 2025, TAS had been fully replaced with MyVT.

By 16 June 2025, we introduced a new digital application process. This meant users were no longer required to upload a PDF – instead, using a simpler and more intuitive application process on GOV.UK.

We first introduced the new process for IVA cars, then introduced them for light goods, trailers, buses, heavy goods vehicles and motorcycles in the following months.

Later, we introduced application templates. You could now re-use information already submitted, saving time during the application process.

Errors on application forms could cause an application to be rejected – leading to delays.

This new approach helps you to submit applications correctly first time. And it's working! Our data shows a significant reduction in application rejections – hopefully saving you time, stress and money.

How we work with you

We’ve also changed how we will be running the Vehicle Examination Facility (VEF) network, so VEFs have the freedom to book their own examinations.

This is done through Test Presentation Management (TPM) software. It allows VEFs to request visiting examiners to carry out tests and inform us of the scheduled bookings they have.

This replaces the manual processes previously used by Privately Owned Test Facilities (PoTFs) and introduces a real-time, fully digital method.

This makes it more reliable, transparent and efficient for everyone. Visiting examiners will receive a digitally generated Daily Work Programme. This is a clear, structured overview of the day’s planned testing activity, which mirrors the system used at DVSA owned sites.

All VEFs will have access to the new system when approved.

We’ve also expanded MyVT’s account management features. VEFs can add up to 6 additional users to their account, with more available on request. This allows VEFs to delegate key business functions and ensure the right people can access and manage critical tasks.

Our data shows the industry has benefitted – so have we. With MyVT, we can build on our success, improving the service based on your feedback. We can also adapt to new technology quicker, adding forms when new innovations come to the market.

Plus, the system is easier to maintain, meaning we have more resources to invest in your service.

Looking Ahead

The modernisation of DVSA services is an ongoing journey. Since MyVT's launch, we've run feedback surveys which show a positive response. We can now focus on the next steps.

We have just introduced a function for users to delete unwanted draft applications.

Now, we’re working on allowing users to view application answers once they have been submitted – they will be able to make changes and re-submit at the request of DVSA.

We don’t have a timeframe for these yet, but we will continue to work with you to improve the service.

We hope these new features have made your life easier. If you would like to help us improve, leave a comment below or send feedback here: MYVT user satisfaction survey
