Today I am setting out the Government position on the supply of offshore wind turbines from MingYang, a Chinese turbine supplier. This has followed offshore wind developers seeking the Government’s view on the use of MingYang Smart Energy turbines in British waters and in our energy system.

After careful consideration, Government’s view is that we cannot support the use of them in UK offshore wind projects. We have informed offshore wind developers of this.

We will always act to protect our national security, and we are committed to strengthening and prioritising resilient and sustainable offshore wind supply chains.

We welcome investment from China where it’s in our national interest – as demonstrated through the announcement of significant inward investment during the Prime Minister’s visit to Beijing early in the year. We will continue to take a long term and strategic approach to managing relations with China – cooperating where we can, while being clear-eyed to any risks and ensuring security and resilience.

The UK continues to be a world leader in offshore wind, which provides secure, domestically generated electricity, and will play a key role in achieving clean power by 2030 and net zero, and attract investment, creating thousands of new jobs around the country.
