Vacancy: Senior Judge of the Court of Protection

The Judicial Appointments Commission has been asked to identify one candidate for the post of Senior Judge of the Court of Protection.

The Court of Protection makes decisions on financial, or welfare matters for people who are unable to make decisions on their own behalf at the time they need to be made (they ‘lack mental capacity’).

The Senior Judge of the Court of Protection (SJ) will be a Senior Circuit Judge who is responsible for leading the Court of Protection in the London Region and has day to day oversight of the judicial work of the Court of Protection throughout England and Wales.

In addition to the statutory eligibility, candidates must be able to demonstrate substantial knowledge of the Court of Protection jurisdiction, including the law and practice relating to either personal welfare or property and affairs, or both. The candidate must have experience in these areas of law and procedure, and this experience should have been within the last five years.

Candidates are also expected to have previous judicial experience and must already be authorised or be suitable for authorisation to the pool of judges upon appointment to act as a judge of the High Court under section 9(1) of the Senior Courts Act 1981.

See the full job description on the JAC website (external link).

The deadline for applications is Wednesday 29 April 2026.
