SFI26 update: around 25% of window 1 budget now allocated

As part of our commitment to keep you informed about the progress of the Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026 (SFI26), we said we would publish updates as funding is allocated.

We can confirm that around 25% of the Window 1 budget has now been allocated, based on applications received so far.

As expected when Window 1 opened, demand was strong on the first day, with a high number of applications. We had planned for a range of uptake scenarios, including this level of early interest.

The latest data shows that application volumes have begun to level off, and applications are being received at a steady pace.

This reflects the value farmers see in the scheme and the opportunities it provides to support sustainable food production while delivering benefits for nature and the environment.

Eligibility for Window 1 is designed to prioritise smaller farm businesses and those who have not previously participated in agri-environment schemes, ensuring that farms which have historically had fewer opportunities to access support are among the first to benefit from the offer.

If you are eligible to apply in Window 1 and have not yet submitted your application, we encourage you to take the time to ensure it is complete and accurate before you apply.

In particular, check that your digital maps show:

all the land parcels you want to include in your SFI26 application, with the correct areas and land covers. If you need to update your maps, use the Rural Payments service to ask the RPA to do this as soon as possible at least 3ha of agricultural land - otherwise, you won’t be able to start an SFI26 application

Read section 7 ‘Get ready to apply’ in the SFI26 scheme rules and guidance for more information.

Eligible applicants who do not apply during Window 1 will have an opportunity to apply during Window 2, which is expected to open September.

We will continue to monitor demand closely and will publish further updates when approximately 50% and 75% of the £60 million Window 1 budget has been allocated. Please subscribe to the Farming Blog for a notification.
